ME: Ok, time to write! BRAIN: No. ME: What do you mean, no? I have a short story first draft that needs finishing, and I have time to work on it. Let's do this thing! BRAIN: No, I'd rather check Facebook again. ME: We just did that. BRAIN: How about Livejournal? ME: No one's posted … Continue reading Conversations With My Brain

Your Writing Soundtrack
I'm not someone who has to have music on when I write. I've written in silence, and I've written in noisy places without benefit of music--or sometimes in places playing music I didn't care for, which meant I tuned the music out. But I prefer to have music (that I like) on when I write. … Continue reading Your Writing Soundtrack
Grad school weeeeee!
And today we have an acceptance of the non-writing variety: waiting in my inbox earlier was a shiny acceptance from Drexel's master in library and information science program. One grad school response down, one more to go! I am quite looking forward to the fall.
The Writerly Update: Butt + Chair = Productivity Edition
In theory, I should have had more writing time last week. In actuality, I didn't make a lick of progress on the short story I had started the week before. But today? Oh, today was surprisingly lovely for a Monday. For what felt like the first time in ages, I sat down and just cranked … Continue reading The Writerly Update: Butt + Chair = Productivity Edition
“A Song Never Tasted” at Daily Science Fiction
Shameless plug alert: my story "A Song Never Tasted" is now up on Daily Science Fiction's website for your reading pleasure/pain/critical dismemberment.
The Writerly (and Readerly) Update
As expected, this past week was rather weird for me schedule-wise. Adjusting to the whole part-time from home day job shift was sort of like pulling on an old pair of pants; you're thrilled they fit again, but it's been so long since you've worn them that you're trying to remember which tops look right … Continue reading The Writerly (and Readerly) Update
Dreams of Suckitude
Several months back, I had a dream that that one of my upcoming publications with Daily Science Fiction had gone out and readers were unanimously agreed that it sucked as hard as a story could possibly suck, and then some. The story went out for real this morning, so I woke up full of everyone's-going-to-hate-it … Continue reading Dreams of Suckitude
These are not the keyword results you are looking for
For me, one of the best parts of using website tracking tools is seeing some of the odd keyword searches that have led people to my blog or website. Some are just entertaining. Others leave me wondering, "What in Jeebus' name was this person hoping to find?"My short story "Love Spells" once received a rather … Continue reading These are not the keyword results you are looking for
Two Quick & Shiny Things
First, my story "Dumping the Dead" was selected for inclusion in The Best of Every Day Fiction Three. And second, a review of "Mortis Persona" at Tangent Online says, among other things, "Barnett's lush prose does a fantastic job of building this world." I don't think I've ever had my prose described as lush before, … Continue reading Two Quick & Shiny Things
The FUBAR is strong with this one
2011 and I do not seem to have gotten off on the right foot. These last two days have been rather strong with the FUBAR side of the Force, but it's all stupid trivial crap which has the added annoyance of making me feel bad for wanting to complain because it's, well, stupid trivial crap. … Continue reading The FUBAR is strong with this one
